W8Q - Michigan's Copper Mining Heritage / 100th Anniversary of the Quincy Mine Shaft #2 Rockhouse

September 13, 14 2008 from the Quincy Mine location

The event:  Michigan's copper mines attracted worldwide interest from mine owners and potential mine workers even before the better-known gold-rush days.  Native Americans mined copper since pre-historic times; Michigan copper has been suggested as playing a significant role in the development of the bronze age in Europe (Rydholm - native copper (pure copper chunks) traded along the ice bridge between North America and Europe during the end of the last ice age); Michigan copper powered American industry from before the Civil War through World War II.  The mines, the the owners/operators, the miners are gone, but their powerful, often bitter history echoes on in the Anglican churches, the Finnish names, pasties and the mine ruins operated as tourist attractions.

This event celebrates, in particular, the 100th anniversary of the Shaft #2 rockhouse at the Quincy Mine that overlooks the towns of Hancock and Houghton, Michigan.

Event logistics: We will be operating from the flat ground just south of the entrance to the #2 Shaft House with a possible secondary operating location just south of the drive to the Shaft House, as shown on this aerial:

Primary location offers some wind protection from the NE, E and SE, has bathrooms (until 6:00 pm) and may be able to provide power if we can figure out how to run an extension cord under the door.  A flat air-conditioner cord may fit.  Secondary location would have to rely on generator/battery power.

See Band/Ops plan.

QSL Route:

Please include your contact report and SASE (standard business for QSL card, 8.5 x 11 (or larger) for certificate.)

For certificate, please include a green stamp to cover cost of production and the backer material we use to assure it arrives in good condition.
